Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has relieved his Political Adviser, Sunusi Kwankwaso, of his appointment with immediate effect, citing poor performance and conduct considered inimical to effective governance.

The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa.

According to the statement, the action followed an extensive assessment of the activities of the office, which revealed a failure to meet the expectations and responsibilities attached to the position.

“The decision was taken after a thorough evaluation showed that the office failed to meet the required standards of performance and responsibility,” the statement read.

The governor said the move was necessary to safeguard the integrity of his administration and restore harmony, focus, and effectiveness within government operations, stressing that loyalty, discipline, and performance remain the guiding principles of his leadership.

“This administration will not condone any action capable of undermining unity, stability, and effective governance,” Yusuf said.

In a related development, the governor approved the appointment of Mustapha Bakwana as the new Political Adviser, expressing confidence that the appointee would bring renewed commitment and professionalism to the office.

The sack comes amid heightened political tension in Kano State following Governor Yusuf’s recent exit from the New Nigeria People’s Party, a development that has triggered resignations and political realignments within the state.

PUNCH earlier on Friday reports that Sunusi Kwankwaso had released a video on Friday announcing his resignation as political adviser, citing reports of the governor’s defection and his expected move to the All Progressives Congress.

In the video shared on social media said, “After we got information that the governor has left the NNPP and there are expectations that he will join the APC, I submitted my resignation letter, but it was not accepted.”

He added that he was compelled to publicly announce his decision after efforts to formally resign proved unsuccessful.

“I am making this video to publicly inform everyone that I have resigned my position as a political adviser. I appreciate the opportunity to serve and the work we did together over the past two years,” he said.

Sunusi, however, ruled out defecting to the APC, reaffirming his loyalty to Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya movement.

“I will not betray Kwankwaso or the Kwankwasiyya movement. I remain with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and I will not join the APC,” he stated.

The governor reiterated his commitment to building a united, responsive, and people-oriented government driven by accountability and results, as political developments continue to reshape Kano State’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
