“It’s time to keep crying” – Chippa United star sends cryptic message in return to Super Eagles squad

Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has sent a cryptic message after returning to the Super Eagles squad for the first time since the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Chippa United goalkeeper posted a video from Nigeria’s bronze-medal victory over Egypt at AFCON 2025 on his Snapchat, showing his penalty saves against Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush. Nwabali captioned the video: “I’m back, it’s time to keep crying .”

The message comes at an intriguing moment for the 30-year-old, who has returned to Eric Chelle’s squad after a lengthy absence from international football.

Nwabali was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper at the AFCON 2025 and ended the tournament spectacularly, saving penalties from Salah and Marmoush as the Super Eagles defeated Egypt 4-2 on penalties to win the bronze medal. He was also named Man of the Match for the encounter.

Super Eagles: Stanley Nwabali disappeared after AFCON

Nwabali’s international situation changed dramatically after the tournament. The goalkeeper left Chippa United in February following the conclusion of AFCON 2025.

He was widely expected to secure a move elsewhere, but no transfer materialised, leaving him without competitive club football for several months. That inactivity also cost him his place in the Super Eagles

With Nwabali unavailable, Maduka Okoye established himself between the sticks. The Udinese goalkeeper started Nigeria’s June friendlies against Poland and Portugal.

His performances prompted discussion about whether he had taken over as Chelle’s preferred goalkeeper.

Nwabali even addressed the situation while watching Nigeria’s game against Portugal.

Asked about his absence from the national team, the goalkeeper responded: “It’s not everybody that will keep. A lot of players need to play also.”

Arthur Okonkwo entered the picture

While Okoye benefited from Nwabali’s absence, another goalkeeper also made his case. Arthur Okonkwo received his first senior Nigeria call-up after FIFA approved his switch of allegiance, before making his international debut during the 2026 Unity Cup.

The former Arsenal academy goalkeeper started both of Nigeria’s matches in the tournament, keeping clean sheets in the 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe and the 3-0 win against Jamaica.

Those performances strengthened the competition for the Super Eagles’ number-one position, with Okonkwo expressing his desire to become a trusted regular for Nigeria.

By the time Nigeria’s September squad was announced, Chelle had three goalkeeping options to consider: Nwabali, Okoye and Okonkwo.

Nwabali returned to Chippa United and Nigeria

Nwabali’s comeback began in July when Chippa United announced that he had returned to the club five months after his departure. The club said he had “taken time away” before returning to the Eastern Cape.

He quickly reclaimed the starting position and made his return to competitive football. Nwabali began the new season strongly, earning Man of the Match recognition after making six saves and keeping a clean sheet against Golden Arrows.

The return to regular football eventually opened the door back into the Super Eagles. Chelle included him alongside Okoye and Okonkwo for Nigeria’s September AFCON 2027 qualifiers.

Who exactly is Nwabali telling to “keep crying”?

That is where the goalkeeper’s latest post becomes interesting. The most obvious interpretation is that Nwabali is simply celebrating his return and reminding everyone of the penalty shootout performance that helped Nigeria win bronze in Morocco.

But the “keep crying” line leaves room for another reading. Nwabali spent months away from the Super Eagles, during which Okoye became Nigeria’s regular goalkeeper, and Okonkwo arrived on the international scene with two clean sheets.

There were also doubts about whether Nwabali would regain his position after his prolonged spell without club football. Former Nigeria goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu had warned that his lack of regular football could threaten his position in Chelle’s squad.

Nwabali eventually returned to Chippa, regained regular football and earned his recall. His post could also be interpreted as a message to those who doubted that he would return to the Super Eagles.

It could also be playful competition aimed at the goalkeepers now challenging him for the number-one shirt, or perhaps directed at Friday’s opponents, Madagascar.

For now, there is no direct evidence in the post identifying the intended target. What is clear is that Nwabali is back and has another opportunity to reclaim his place between the posts.
