Unidentified gunmen attacked the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat in Damaturu, Yobe State, in the early hours of Friday, September 19, 2025, injuring a police officer assigned to guard the building.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m., when the assailants reportedly opened fire on the officer, hitting him in the leg. The injured officer was promptly taken to the Police Hospital in Damaturu, where he is receiving medical treatment.
Rajab Ismail Mohammed, Chairman of the NUJ Yobe Council, described the attack as “unfortunate and scary,” adding that it went beyond an assault on a security guard. “This is not only an attack on the individual but also an intimidation tactic against the press corps in Yobe State,” he said.
Mohammed called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible are apprehended and brought to justice.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear as authorities continue to probe the case.
