The Gombe State Police Command has imposed a restriction on motorcycle movement between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. daily in an effort to combat the rising menace of ‘Kalare’ thuggery in parts of the state.

Meanwhile, residents have expressed concerns about the impact of the restrictions, particularly for those who close late from work or shops and rely on motorcycles for transportation. Many lamented that the move could lead to significant challenges for individuals without personal vehicles.

The measure followed the murder of an industrialist, Amadi Kasiran, by suspected Kalare thugs who reportedly attacked him while attempting to snatch his phone.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Gombe State Command, Buhari Abdullahi, announced the directive in a statement yesterday. He stated that motorcyclists are now prohibited from carrying more than one passenger.

Also banned was the display of weapons such as knives and machetes during public gatherings, celebrations, and events.

“Security personnel have been directed to enforce these directives rigorously, and anyone found violating them will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” Abdullahi warned.

The police also prohibited the use of truck or vehicle-type horns on motorcycles, citing concerns over public safety. According to the PPRO, the ban seeks to curb the intimidation of road users caused by such horns, which are often used by youths to scare pedestrians and other motorists.

“This directive is part of proactive security measures aimed at preventing violence, intimidation, and avoidable incidents,” he added.

The command reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights of residents while taking firm action against activities that threaten lives and public safety.
