The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, on Wednesday disclosed that the capacity of corps members for optimal productivity is being affected by some internal challenges related to integrity, efficiency, and operational discipline.
Mohammed made this disclosure in Abuja during the 2025 half-year strategic session of the FRSC with the theme ‘Driving Change from Within: Reinforcing Integrity, Accountability and Performance’, organised quarterly by the Corp to review performance and to brainstorm in the way forward.
According to the Corps Marshall, reports reveal that there are challenges in enforcement operations due to patrol misconduct, rising cases of indiscipline, bribery and corruption, poor command oversight, absenteeism, drug abuse and increasing incivility towards motorists.
The challenges, Mohammed noted, are major factors affecting the FRSC internal administration control and negatively impacting members’ performance, adding that it has also created deep concerns among Nigerians who have placed a high premium on the FRSC’s ability to deliver on its mandate.
To this end, he noted that the agency’s officers must take deliberate measures to reposition the Corps on the path of accountability and professional excellence forthwith.
Mohammed stated: “In reviewing our enforcement operations, it is clear that Management has committed significant resources towards addressing our challenges in road traffic and safety management.
“However, reports reveal that there are challenges in enforcement operations due to patrol misconduct, corruption, poor command oversight, absenteeism, drug abuse, and increasing incivility towards motorists.
“These are major factors affecting our internal administrative control and negatively impacting our performance.
“As we converge for this high-level strategy session, our consultations must be solution-driven in line with our commitment to reposition the Corps on the path of accountability and professional excellence.
“Our efforts must be channelled to drive the needed changes from within our workforce. The burning issues for discussion should therefore be focused on the aforementioned challenges.”
Also, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Muhammed Danjuma, congratulated the FRSC on its remarkable achievements, despite the challenges of insufficient funding.
He said, “No doubt, the performance of the Corps is an outcome of strategic leadership as well as the commitment of its staff.
“I therefore urge you to sustain this enduring milestone as we strive to reduce carnage on our highways.”
Akume assured that the government would continue to support your programmes to attain the vision of zero traffic deaths.
