The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) have agreed to strengthen collaboration in the country’s anti-corruption campaign.
The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by Barrister Sulyman Kosemani, chairman of the NBA’s Ilorin branch, to EFCC Ilorin Zonal Director Daniel Isei on Tuesday.
Kosemani commended the cooperation between the EFCC and lawyers in Kwara State but called for deeper ties. He urged the EFCC to step up scrutiny of politically exposed persons, particularly public officials, to promote accountability in the management of state resources, especially with increased allocations after the removal of fuel subsidies.
He also advocated for greater participation of lawyers in EFCC operations, arguing that such involvement would improve efficiency and foster stronger relations between the agency and legal practitioners.
Responding, Isei described lawyers as “indispensable allies” in the anti-corruption drive, stressing the need for closer synergy. “Lawyers and law enforcement agents cannot do without each other. We can achieve more together,” he said.
He, however, cautioned lawyers against interfering with EFCC investigations and urged them to provide credible intelligence, particularly in high-profile cases. He reminded the delegation of their role as “ministers in the temple of justice” and advised against filing applications that could delay trials.
“Our gates are open to lawyers and other stakeholders for collaboration,” Isei added, reiterating the EFCC’s commitment to professionalism and integrity.
