Dutch and Sparta Rotterdam goalkeeper Joel Drommel made history by equalling Maduka Okoye‘s shot-stopping record in his side’s 1-0 win over NAC Breda, Soccernet.ng reports.

Okoye set the record on April 19, 2022, making eight saves and keeping a clean sheet in Rotterdam’s 1-0 win over Vitesse.

Drommel, 29, did one better yesterday, making nine saves and getting the man of the match award after a display that inspired De Kasteelheren to their sixth league win of the season.

Now the holder of the record or the most saves in a top-flight Dutch game since the collection of data started in 2004, the 29-year-old said;

“Man of the game. Yeah, well, maybe. I think so too,” the former PSV goalkeeper said in quotes revealed by VI.NL.

“Super fun, but I feel like I’m freezing. It was really bad weather, but during the game I didn’t feel that. I haven’t been cold, but can we hurry up now?’

“I’m also in front of it as a goalkeeper. Certainly. For me, this is enjoyable, yes. You can help your teammates; that’s a wonderful feeling.

“I felt before halftime, after my second save, that this could be such an evening. A night when I would take everything out.

Maduka Okoye is now primed to be the Super Eagles’ starting goalkeeper at the AFCON 2025 tournament after Stanley Nwabali suffered a hand injury that will require him to undergo surgery.
