NAN
A Life Camp Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja has ordered the remand of a 30-year-old businesswoman, Eno Otone, who allegedly defrauded her friend of N1.9 million.

The police charged the defendant, a resident of Jaiye, Abuja, with criminal breach of trust and cheating.

She, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Musa Jobbo, ordered that the defendant should be kept at the Suleja custodial facility pending a formal bail application for her.

He had asked the defendant if she had a legal counsel, and she replied in the negative.

The judge then remanded her and told her to apply formally for bail.

Jobbo adjourned the case until May 29 for mention.

Earlier, prosecution counsel, Mrs Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that the complainant, Mrs Chinyere Azubuike of Gwarinpa, Abuja, reported the case at Life Camp Police Station on March 13.

Nwachukwu, said that, sometime in July 2024, the defendant collected N 2.4 million from the complainant and promised to repay the money by August 2024.

She told the court that the defendant paid only N417,000 and refused to pay about N1.9 million.

The prosecutor told the court that during a police investigation, the defendant made a confessional statement but all efforts to recover the balance of the money proved abortive.

Nwachukwu told the court that the offences contravened Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code
