Residents of Abraka, Delta State, have called for accountability following the death of a pregnant woman allegedly killed by a stray bullet fired by a member of Operation Delta Sweep during a chase of suspected internet fraudsters.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, left many in shock as videos shared online showed the woman lying in a pool of blood before being lifted into a vehicle by a uniformed officer and passersby. She was confirmed dead before she could be treated at a hospital.

Community members who spoke to journalists described the death as unacceptable. They accused security personnel of recklessness and demanded that those responsible be identified and prosecuted.

One resident, who witnessed the scene, said: “People were going about their daily activities when suddenly there was commotion. In the process of the chase, a bullet hit the woman. Now a family is in mourning.”

The development has heightened tension in the town, with some residents staging small demonstrations to press for justice. They also urged the government to review the operations of joint task forces in civilian areas.

Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Ethiope East Local Government Council, Augustine Ogedegbe, appealed for calm while assuring the public that the matter would not be ignored.

“While we acknowledge the challenging work our security personnel face in maintaining law and order, it is deeply concerning to see incidents like this, which diverge from their intended duties of combating crime and ensuring public safety,” Ogedegbe said.

“We will pursue this issue with the seriousness it deserves and ensure that justice is served while taking the necessary steps to prevent such occurrences in the future.”
Ogedegbe appealed for calm, urging residents to avoid reprisals while investigations continue.

“My heartfelt condolences go to the family of the deceased during this difficult time” he said.
