Chippa United GK on alert after Maduka Okoye injury update

Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali could be the first-choice option for the Super Eagles in the upcoming international break, but that may depend on the fitness of Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, Soccernet.ng reports.

​Nwabali was Nigeria’s undisputed first choice for two years until the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year. In February, the 30-year-old left Chippa United and stepped away from football until returning last month.

​With Nwabali out of the picture, Okoye stepped up to claim the starting role, producing impressive performances against Portugal and Poland in June. Those displays sparked discussions that he might now be Éric Chelle’s main man in goal.

​However, Nwabali returned to Chippa United last month, and it was revealed that he maintained an understanding with coach Chelle throughout his time away due to personal health concerns.

​Since his return, Nwabali has looked sharp for Chippa United. Coincidentally, Okoye suffered a shoulder injury three weeks ago during a pre-season training session, initially raising fears that he would be sidelined for a few months.

While that would be a major blow for Udinese, it could have opened the door for Nwabali to reclaim his number-one shirt with the Super Eagles. But the situation has shifted once again.

​According to a fresh update from Tutto Udinese, Maduka Okoye has returned to full training. He could feature when Udinese face Padova in the Coppa Italia on Saturday, though the club is exercising caution to prevent a relapse.

​Consequently, he is expected to make his competitive return on August 22, when Udinese play their opening Serie A fixture against Como.

​This means the Super Eagles star will be fit and ready when Nigeria returns to action in September for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

​This new development complicates Chelle’s decision on who guards the posts for Nigeria’s upcoming matches. Given Okoye’s strong form in June, Nwabali may find himself watching from the bench.

​Ultimately, coach Chelle faces a tough dilemma: whether to stay loyal to Nwabali or reward Okoye for his stellar performances in the national team’s recent outings.
