Chelsea’s squad could look very different in the coming months as new manager Xabi Alonso begins work on a major rebuild at Stamford Bridge, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Spaniard is set to officially take charge on July 1 after signing a four-year contract, and Chelsea’s hierarchy has handed him significant control over shaping the squad ahead of the new season. While some players have already secured important roles in Alonso’s plans, others face an uncertain future.

Among those attracting particular interest are three players of Nigerian descent: Tosin Adarabioyo, Tyrique George and Emmanuel Emegha. However, their situations under the new Chelsea boss are very different.

Chelsea: Tosin secure as George, Emegha face tough decisions

Tosin Adarabioyo seemingly is an important part of Alonso’s plans. The central defender, who appears destined to commit his international future to Nigeria, is viewed as one of the key leaders in Chelsea’s dressing room. Alonso reportedly sees Tosin as a vital figure alongside captain Reece James, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez as he attempts to establish a stronger culture within the squad.

The former Fulham and Manchester City defender’s Premier League experience, leadership qualities and calm style of defending make him a valuable asset. Although Chelsea are expected to sign another top centre-back this summer, Tosin has not been asked to leave and is expected to remain a significant member of the squad.

The picture is less clear for winger Tyrique George after Chelsea missed out on signing young Nigerian forward Zadok Yohanna. The 20-year-old academy graduate spent last season on loan at Everton but struggled to secure regular opportunities, making just one start during his spell. Chelsea are now believed to be open to a permanent sale as they seek to balance their books and comply with financial regulations.

Because George is a homegrown player, any transfer fee received would represent pure profit on Chelsea’s accounts. Everton reportedly have a £25 million option to sign him permanently, although doubts remain over whether they will activate the clause. The player is also understood to be open to a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Emegha’s situation is perhaps the most intriguing. The Dutch striker will officially join Chelsea this summer after an agreement was reached with Strasbourg in 2025. The 23-year-old forward signed a long-term seven-year deal but remained in France for an additional season to continue his development.

Standing at 6ft 5in, Emegha arrives with a strong reputation, but Alonso wants to assess all of his attacking options during pre-season before making a final decision. Nicolas Jackson is expected to be given the first opportunity to impress during Chelsea’s summer preparations, meaning Emegha could either become part of the first-team squad or be sent out on loan again.

All three players have Nigerian roots. Tosin was born to Nigerian parents, George has a Nigerian father, while Emegha’s mother is Nigerian from Delta State. While both Tosin and George remain eligible for the Super Eagles, Emegha already made two appearances for Netherlands.

As Alonso begins his Stamford Bridge revolution, Tosin appears set to play a leading role, while George and Emegha may soon discover that their long-term futures lie away from west London.
