Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has completed a transfer to English Championship club Charlton Athletic, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigeria goalkeeper’s future has been in the balance all summer. Since the end of last season. It was made clear to him that he would no longer play a key role for Wrexham. Then, they made a statement signing last week, bringing in Nathan Patterson from Sunderland in a deal worth €8 million.

Okonkwo was absent from the Red Dragons’ opening game of the season against Cardiff City.

What fueled rumours that he was on his way to Charlton was when the club managing director Jim Rodwell confirmed that they were in talks with Wrexham over the signing of a player.

Now, the speculation has been confirmed, as Okonkwo will be joining the Addicks in a season-long loan.

”Arthur showed a real desire to come to us after our initial meeting, which was important for us,” Jones said. “He’s an excellent shot-stopper, has great pedigree, brings solid experience, and the teams he’s played in have done well. I’m really looking forward to working with him.”

Following this transfer, Okonkwo is expected to step in as the first-choice goalkeeper for Charlton Athletic. The move comes as Thomas Kaminski, the club’s primary keeper last season, has fallen out of favor and is likely to depart before the transfer window closes.

The move offers Okonkwo regular playing time to further develop and prove his quality, with the potential for the Addicks to make the loan deal permanent at the end of the season.

After winning their opening match against Derby County, Charlton travel to face West Ham next. Okonkwo looks set to be thrown straight into the thick of things; a standout performance at London Stadium to secure a positive result would deliver an immediate boost to his campaign.
