Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has declared Mrs Adebunmi Adekanbi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the councillorship by-election conducted at the weekend, in Ward 1, Yewa South Council of the state.
The Electoral Officer for the Council, Ademola Akinyele, who announced the results, confirmed that Adekanbi polled 1,873 votes to defeat her closest rival from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who secured 351 votes.
The by-election, conducted following the death of the incumbent councillor, Olayinka Adekanbi, was contested by candidates from 10 political parties, including the APC, PDP, Labour Party (LP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Alliance (AA), and others. Voting took place across 36 polling units.
However, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, representing Ogun West Senatorial District, commended the peaceful atmosphere of the election.
He lauded the Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration for ensuring a transparent and credible exercise, while also extending condolences to the Adekanbi family.
Similarly, the state’s Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Olaolu Olabimtan, who voted at his polling unit in the GRA, Ilaro, praised OGSIEC for what he described as a flawless electoral process. He noted the impressive turnout of voters and expressed confidence that Adekanbi would sustain her late husband’s legacy of service to the community.
In her acceptance speech, the councillor-elect expressed gratitude to the people of Yewa South, the APC leadership, and the governor for their support and loyalty.
She, however, pledged to uphold the good name of her late husband and to serve the ward with dedication.
Commissioner for Legal Affairs, Remilekun Olaopa, who spoke on behalf of OGSIEC Chairman, Babatunde Osibodu, thanked the electorate for their peaceful conduct and discipline at the polling units. She described the by-election as a model of transparency and credibility.
