The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has criticized the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his claim that he won the last presidential election despite admitting he lacked evidence to support the assertion.

The council described Obi’s comments as a troubling display of delusion and accused him of disregarding facts and truth.

In a statement issued on Friday, the spokesperson for the council, Dele Alake, faulted Obi’s remarks during a recent interview with the BBC, where the former Anambra State governor insisted he won the 2023 presidential election.

Obi, who has been linked with the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 presidential election, was quoted as saying, “I don’t like going back to the past; I won the last election. There’s no evidence, but I won the election, as everything is not based on evidence.”

Reacting to the interview, the APC council stated that the former Anambra State governor’s insistence on victory, despite official results, reflected a total detachment from reality.

“For a candidate who placed a distant third in the presidential poll to persistently insist he won, without evidence and contrary to all official records, reflects a deep and troubling disconnection from reality and absolute disregard for facts,” the statement read.

The council maintained that President Bola Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election, noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission declared him the winner, an outcome subsequently upheld by the Presidential Election Petition Court and the Supreme Court.

It also defended the Tinubu administration, asserting that ongoing economic reforms had helped stabilize the economy, expand infrastructure, support small businesses, improve healthcare and education, and generate employment opportunities.

The campaign council further challenged Obi to honour his pledge to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if official records established that his administration left liabilities in Anambra State.

It claimed that financial records from Anambra State had already confirmed the existence of such liabilities.
