The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has re-arrested a 47-year-old Nigerian man from Edo State for alleged human trafficking activities in Uyo, the state capital, the command confirmed on Sunday.

Timfon John, the command’s Public Relations Officer, stated that the suspect was apprehended on August 26 at around 9:30 a.m. at a hotel on Ring Road 3 following intelligence that he was actively involved in trafficking young women to other African countries for prostitution and related activities.

“Acting on credible information, a surveillance team located and apprehended the suspect at a hotel in Uyo. During the arrest, police rescued two victims,” John said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, previously deported from another African country, had trafficked two young women to Libya in July and to Burkina Faso on August 18. John said the suspect admitted during questioning that he received ₦50,000 per victim.

“The parents of the trafficked victims have been contacted to provide statements,” John added.

The command indicated that the suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue to identify and apprehend potential accomplices.

John stressed that the police are intensifying efforts to disrupt human trafficking networks operating within the state and across borders.
