Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has urged the Blues to use the international break to improve after their disappointing 3-0 Premier League defeat to Brentford.
Chelsea started brightly at the Gtech Community Stadium and dominated much of the first half, but their performance dropped after the break as Brentford scored three unanswered goals to secure all three points.
The defeat leaves Chelsea with seven points from their opening five league matches, highlighting the need for improvement as Xabi Alonso continues to shape his side.
In a post on Chelsea’s website on Sunday, Colwill acknowledged that Chelsea have shown both positive and negative signs in the opening weeks of the campaign.
“[There have been] some good bits, some other not so good bits,” the defender said.
The 23-year-old, who missed much of last season through a knee injury, was not included in England’s squad for their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.
That means Colwill will remain with Chelsea during the international break and continue working under Alonso as the team looks to address some of the issues exposed in their defeat at Brentford.
Rather than viewing the break negatively, Colwill believes it can provide valuable time for the squad to regroup, improve and return stronger.
“Luckily we’ve got a while now to try and improve,” he said.
“Hopefully, we will come out the other side flying, pick up our play, and become a better team.”
Chelsea will now have time to reflect on their start to the season before returning to Premier League action, with Colwill confident that the squad can use the period to make progress under Alonso.
