Bayer Leverkusen forward Nathan Tella marked a major milestone on Saturday, making his 100th appearance for the Bundesliga outfit during their 2-1 victory over Köln, a feat the club celebrated with a special post-match presentation.
The 26-year-old Super Eagles star played his part in the derby win at the BayArena, delivering an assured performance and providing the assist for Patrik Schick’s second goal as Leverkusen secured all three points.
“It’s great to get my 100 games with a derby win. We keep going like this,” Tella said after receiving a commemorative plaque from the club.
Tella’s journey at Leverkusen has been a mix of highs and setbacks. He was part of the squad during their historic unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning campaign three seasons ago, where his versatility and energy proved valuable in rotation.
Last season, he enjoyed a steady return of four goals and five assists in 39 appearances. However, the current campaign has been more disrupted, with recurring injury problems limiting his consistency. He only recently returned to regular action a few weeks ago.
Those fitness concerns had sparked speculation over a possible departure in the summer transfer window, with reports suggesting Leverkusen could consider a loan or sale.
The club, however, ended such speculation by handing the Nigerian international a contract extension that runs until 2031, underlining their long-term belief in his qualities.
Since regaining fitness, Tella has responded positively, stringing together a series of encouraging performances over his last few outings and gradually rebuilding momentum in Xabi Alonso’s squad.
Leverkusen currently sit sixth in the Bundesliga, just two points adrift of a UEFA Champions League spot, and will be counting on Tella’s resurgence as they push for a strong finish to the season.
On the international front, Tella’s inconsistent club minutes have also affected his Super Eagles involvement. Although he made his debut in 2023, he has struggled to cement a regular role in the national team setup and is yet to feature under Eric Chelle since the Franco-Malian coach guided Nigeria to Unity Cup success last year.
Still, with his form trending upward again in Germany, Tella will be hoping to force his way into contention for Nigeria’s upcoming friendlies in June.
