The Federal Fire Service, Gombe State Command, on Thursday issued a public safety advisory ahead of the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, urging residents to observe precautionary measures to prevent fire outbreaks and other avoidable emergencies.
The State Controller, DCF Suleiman Suleiman, in a statement, congratulated Muslim faithful on the successful completion of Ramadan and emphasised the need for heightened safety consciousness during the festive period.
“Experience has shown that festive seasons are often accompanied by a rise in fire incidents due to increased domestic and commercial activities. We therefore urge residents to adopt proactive safety practices at all times,” he said.
He advised the public to handle gas cylinders and electrical appliances with care, avoid leaving cooking unattended and refrain from overloading power outlets.
“Generators must be operated strictly in well-ventilated outdoor spaces, while flammable substances should be stored securely and away from heat sources,” he added.
The Controller further called on residents to ensure proper supervision of children during gatherings, maintain adequate ventilation and avoid indiscriminate parking that could obstruct access for emergency responders.
“In view of the prevailing weather conditions, residents should remain hydrated, limit exposure to extreme heat and watch for early signs of heat-related illnesses,” he stated.
He also cautioned against the improper handling and storage of fuel.
“Members of the public are urged to exercise caution at all times, particularly at filling stations and within residential premises,” he warned.
On emergency response, he stressed the importance of timely reporting.
“In the event of any fire incident or related emergency, prompt reporting is critical. Residents can reach the Federal Fire Service, Gombe State Command, on 070-314-97455 or the national emergency line, 112,” he said.
The Command reiterated its readiness to respond to emergencies, noting that public safety remains a collective responsibility.
