Delta State Government has donated N10 million to support the humanitarian work of Miss Chineyenwa Judith Amadi, an Imo State-born cancer awareness advocate. Her initiative, “A Ride for Life”, raises funds to assist cancer patients across Nigeria.
The presentation took place at the Conference Hall of the Secretary to the State Government in Asaba, on Thursday.
Presenting the cheque on behalf of the government, Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, described cancer as “one of the most devastating diseases confronting contemporary society” and said Governor Sheriff Oborevwori had personally directed the donation in support of the initiative.
“This is our contribution, our statement of solidarity, and our commitment to humanity,” Dr Emu said, adding that the gesture reflected the government’s resolve to support initiatives that alleviate human suffering. He noted that cancer affects families, communities, and the healthcare system, and called for efforts aimed at easing the burden to be encouraged.
Dr Emu further disclosed that steps are being taken to establish a cancer facility in the state to ensure residents can access quality treatment without travelling long distances. He also commended Miss Amadi for her transcontinental motorbike ride across 16 countries as part of her advocacy.
“This is not just about goodwill; it is about providing the right information, guidance, and support to help initiatives like this achieve their objectives and make a real impact,” he said.
State Commissioner for Health, Dr Joseph Onojaeme, emphasised the importance of prevention, saying early detection and routine medical checks, especially for cervical and breast cancer, can significantly reduce risks and save lives.
Responding, Miss Amadi expressed gratitude to the Delta State Government, saying her initiative aims to raise funds for patients who cannot afford treatment and provide hope and encouragement to fight the disease.
She noted: “This journey is deeply personal for me. I have lost loved ones to cancer, and I also have loved ones who have survived it. I am currently very close to someone who is battling cancer, and that experience is what truly inspired this project.”
In another health-related development, a civic group, the Texas Elites Forum, concluded its 2025 end-of-year activities with a series of health, youth, and education interventions in the Orerokpe community in Delta.
The four-day programme, held from December 27 to 30, included a two-day free medical outreach at the Orerokpe Primary Health Care Centre, organised in partnership with the Grace Oghoghorie Foundation. More than 1,300 residents benefited from free medical consultations, drugs, basic diagnostic tests, and referrals.
