The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, Abia State chapter, has thrown its weight behind the re-election bid of Governor Alex Otti in the 2027 general election.
The group also passed a vote of confidence on the governor in recognition of what it described as his performance, purposeful leadership and commitment to restoring integrity, efficiency and stability in the state.
The endorsement comes amid recent political developments in Abia State, following a vow by three former governors of the state, led by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, that Otti would not secure a second term in office.
However, ALGON, in a resolution contained in a communiqué issued in Umuahia, the state capital, on Friday, opposed the position of the former governors.
The communiqué was signed by the ALGON chairman in the state, Chinedum Ekeke.
The group stated that Abia State, under Otti’s leadership, is on a path of renewal and progress, adding that the future of the state remains firmly in the hands of its people, whose collective judgment must always be respected.
ALGON said it considered it inappropriate for any individual or group to attempt to pre-empt the democratic process or undermine the visible progress being recorded in the state through speculative political rhetoric.
It called on all political actors, past and present, to engage constructively by presenting ideas, policies and alternative visions capable of advancing development, unity and stability in Abia State, rather than resorting to divisive or distracting statements.
The communiqué partly read, “Since the assumption of office, the administration of Governor Alex Otti has demonstrated a clear commitment to good governance, fiscal responsibility and service delivery, with verifiable improvements recorded across the 17 local governments in the recovery, rehabilitation and construction of roads, healthcare and educational facilities, prompt payment of salaries and pensions, clearing of salary backlogs, and prudent management of public resources.
“ALGON, Abia State, hereby passes a unanimous vote of confidence on Governor Alex Otti and supports his re-election in 2027 in recognition of his demonstrable performance, purposeful leadership and commitment to restoring integrity, efficiency and stability.
“ALGON, Abia State, observes that where citizens were once hesitant to openly identify with Abia State due to years of institutional decline, there is now renewed pride among Abians at home and in the diaspora, reflecting restored confidence in the state’s leadership and public image.”
It added, “As custodians of grassroots governance, members of ALGON, Abia State, are in constant interaction with our communities, and we can attest to the growing public confidence in the direction of governance and the tangible benefits currently being experienced by our people.
“In a democratic system, leadership is determined by performance and the freely expressed will of the electorate through credible elections, and not by declarations, pronouncements or political gambles. Public discourse must be approached with facts, not falsehoods, exaggerations or revisionist narratives. ALGON, Abia State, will always elevate public engagement, recognising the common saying that facts are sacred.
