The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called on the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, to remain focused on his duties and ignore attempts by detractors to distract him from delivering on his mandate.
In a statement issued in Abakaliki, the Deputy President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, described the recent attacks on the Minister as politically motivated, alleging that they stem from resentment towards his achievements and his strong alliance with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Isiguzoro said any attempt to undermine or discredit the Minister would be considered an attack on the collective dignity and progress of the Igbo people, warning that such actions would be firmly resisted.
He said, “It should be made known, unequivocally, that we, the people of Igboland, will protect and defend Senator Umahi from any and all conspiracies or political machinations from any source whatsoever. Enough is enough.”
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo calls upon Senator Umahi to remain resolute and not be distracted by the noise from those seeking to derail the progress of President Tinubu’s administration,” he said.
“Ndigbo and all well-meaning Nigerians stand with him as he continues to deliver quality road infrastructure across the country.”
Isiguzoro noted that Umahi’s appointment as Minister of Works was historic, being the first time in 74 years that an Igbo person has held the position since 1951.
He said Umahi’s performance, particularly his promotion of cement technology in road construction, has revolutionised infrastructure delivery and earned him nationwide commendation.
According to him, “Umahi’s achievements are a testament to his competence and the President’s recognition of Igbo merit. We view any attempt to malign him as an attack not only on his person but on the collective progress of Ndigbo.”
He further alleged that credible intelligence had exposed plots by opposition elements to weaken the Tinubu administration by targeting some of its most effective ministers, with Umahi among the main targets.
“The intention of this campaign is to tarnish the Minister’s reputation and distract him from his vital work. However, Nigerians have seen his results and remain supportive of his efforts,” Isiguzoro said.
He reaffirmed Ohanaeze’s support for the Tinubu administration, pledging that the Igbo nation would continue to back the government for its inclusive approach and recognition of competence.
