The Abia State Environmental Sanitation Agency (ASEPA) has initiated measures to address environmental issues caused by cattle rearing within the Umuahia Zone.
The agency met with the President Generals (PGs) of communities in Umuahia North Local Council to discuss sanitation concerns and sustainable solutions, with emphasis on waste disposal and tackling cattle-related problems in rural areas.
Challenges identified include indiscriminate excretion of dung by cattle, destruction of farmlands, and obstruction of roads. At the meeting, led by the Zonal Deputy General Manager of ASEPA, Ambrose Jonah, participants expressed concern over the impact of cattle activities on the environment and agreed to identify cattle owners and develop policies to mitigate the problems.
The PGs were tasked with formulating strategies for sanitation, refuse disposal, and flood control in line with state and local government regulations.
The meeting also resolved to hold regular community engagements and strengthen collaboration between PGs and ASEPA management to monitor progress and evaluate success in addressing environmental issues in the zone.
