Residents of Agwagune community in Cross River State are now counting their losses following the destruction of their homes and property after a three-day continuous heavy downpour that resulted in severe flooding.
Many roads and houses were damaged, with residents displaced, markets closed, and socioeconomic activity paralysed as a result of the devastating effects of the flood.
Following the flood, the riverbanks have overflowed, with water surging into houses and turning farmlands into streams.
Many residents of affected communities who spoke with our Correspondent called on the state government, federal authorities, and humanitarian agencies to come to their aid, as life has become unbearable for them.
They also appealed to the government for intervention to rebuild damaged infrastructure and implement long-term flood control measures such as drainage construction, dredging, and improved town planning.
Also reacting, the Councillor of Agwagune/Okurike Ward, Agamgbor Orok Lyam, condoled with and sympathised with the people of Agwagune village over the flooding.
Also speaking, a victim of the disaster, Madam Grace Unoh, described how she narrowly escaped with her family as floodwaters surged through the village during the early morning rainfall.
Another resident affected by the flood described the damage as devastating. He appealed to the federal and state governments, as well as intervention agencies, to respond quickly to the plight of the victims.
A businessman in the village expressed dismay that the flood has rendered socioeconomic activities in the area paralysed. He equally appealed to the government to address the menace permanently.
Joseph Ogbodum, a rural farmer in the area, lamented that he could not access his farm because the flood had cut off the road.
