A spokesman of President Bola Tinubu has called on the United Kingdom government to send British Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch “home for proper re-education.”
Tinubu’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, in a post on X, said Badenoch expressed ignorance of Nigerian laws on citizenship.
Onanuga’s reaction came after Badenoch, in an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, claimed she is unable to pass Nigerian citizenship to her children because of her gender.
“It’s virtually impossible, for example, to get Nigerian citizenship,” she said. “I have that citizenship by virtue of my parents, I can’t give it to my children because I’m a woman.”
“Yet loads of Nigerians come to the UK and stay for a relatively free period of time, acquire British citizenship. We need to stop being naive.”
Contrary to Badenoch’s claim, section 25(1)(c) of the Nigerian Constitution states that a person born outside the country is a citizen of Nigeria if either of their parents is Nigerian.
In response to Badenoch’s claims, Onanuga on Monday said that Badenoch lied and that she owes her fatherland some apology.
“Britain should send our lost daughter Kemi Badenoch home for a proper re-education,” Onanuga said.
