Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has completed his transfer to Turkish Super Lig club Konyaspor, Soccernet.ng reports.
Awaziem’s future had been the subject of speculation since the conclusion of the previous season. He originally joined Nantes the prior summer, but following the club’s relegation, he made it clear that he would seek a departure.
Over the past week, Turkey emerged as his most likely destination amid strong links to Konyaspor. Then, On Wednesday night, the club confirmed the deal after he put pen to paper on a two-year contract that will keep him in Turkey until the summer of 2028. The Nigerian defender will don the number 15 jersey at the club.
Awaziem has built a reputation as a proper journeyman, with Konyaspor marking his 10th European club in his career which has spanned 12 years. Konyaspor has featured in the Turkish Super Lig since the 2013/14 season and captured its lone Turkish Cup title in 2017.
Awaziem Joins Super Eagles’ Turkish Contingent
Chidozie Awaziem is the latest Nigerian player to move to Turkey. Fellow Nigerian star Victor Osimhen joined Galatasaray two years ago, while Ibrahim Olawoyin has been plying his trade with Rizespor since 2023.
Paul Onuachu and Chibuike Nwaiwu are also at Trabzonspor, though both could depart this summer.
Earlier in the transfer window, Kelechi Iheanacho completed a transfer to Turkish second-tier club Bursaspor, followed earlier this week by Gift Orban sealing a loan move to newly promoted side Amedspor.
With the transfer window remaining open well into September, additional Nigerian players could still secure moves to Turkey.
For Awaziem, his immediate objective will be helping Konyaspor secure its Super Lig status and making a strong push in the Turkish Cup.
