A major tragedy was averted in Enugu on Monday as an articulated vehicle, loaded with 33,000 liters of fuel, collided with a tipper at the notorious Ugwu Onyeama axis of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway in Enugu State.
No fewer than six occupants of the vehicles escaped death from the incident. They, however, escaped unhurt.
Our correspondent gathered that the two vehicles had a collision while the tanker was descending from the Ninth Mile end of the road while the tipper was climbing from the Enugu end on the single lane.
The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Enugu State, Mr. Franklin Agbakoba, who confirmed the accident said that his officers had condoned off the crash scene and had commenced traffic control while firefighters stationed there with their fire engines in case of any fire outbreak.
Agbakoba said, “Actually, there was a crash involving a tanker and a tipper.
“Only one person was injured while about six persons were inside. They came out unhurt while the injured person has been taken to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital Parklane, Enugu for treatment.
“There was no fire outbreak. Our men are there with those of the fire service. We were able to ward off people that came to scoop PMS from the scene.
“We had to block the road, divert traffic to the other lane. Up till now, the road is still diverted. We’re waiting for a tanker to come and transload the contents”.
Recently, 16 passengers perished at the same Ninth-mile axis two months ago when a trailer carrying fuel collapsed and went up in flames.
More than eight vehicles were also consumed in the inferno.
