The Association of Benue State Orphans has presented an award of merit to Makurdi-based businessman, Chief Nnaemeka Eyah, in recognition of his philanthropic support to orphans and the vulnerable in the state.
The “Ambassador of Orphans” award was conferred on Eyah, an indigene of Enugu State and a former banker, at the premises of Zimba Orange Resources and Management Limited in Makurdi.
Presenting the award, Emmanuel Shawon, President of the association, said the honour was to acknowledge Eyah’s commitment to the education and welfare of orphans.
He said: “The association got to know that he is paying school fees for many orphans. He doesn’t publicise it, but we found him out. We recognise people to encourage them, and so that others will also emulate them. The world would be a better place if people did as Eyah does.”
Shawon disclosed that many orphans in Benue are currently on scholarship through the businessman’s support.
Responding, Eyah expressed gratitude for the recognition. He said he did not expect such an award and pledged to do more to assist orphans and widows as his resources would allow.
Speaking with The Guardian after the ceremony, he added: “I enjoy lifting people up, to put a smile on people’s faces. Kindness and philanthropy is my own religion.”
On how he funds his humanitarian efforts, the philanthropist said proceeds from his business sustain his interventions. He also revealed that he provides start-up capital to widows and the vulnerable to enable them to engage in petty trading, achieve self-reliance and live with dignity.
