The Obidient Movement has debunked reports suggesting a fallout between Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi and the party’s Acting National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, describing such speculation as “false and deliberately misleading.”
The Labour Party has faced internal leadership disputes in recent months, but a Supreme Court decision earlier this year upheld Senator Nenadi Usman as the Acting National Chairman. Peter Obi has remained publicly aligned with her leadership since then.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the National Coordinator of the Movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, dismissed the rumoured friction, saying Obi remains fully committed to the Labour Party under Usman’s leadership, especially following the recent Supreme Court ruling that affirmed her as the party’s lawful Acting Chairman.
The speculation was triggered by Obi’s presence at the flag-off of the Anambra State governorship campaign of Labour Party candidate, Dr. George Moghalu, over the weekend.
Some observers interpreted his appearance as a signal of division within the party.
Dr. Tanko, however, said such interpretations were unfounded.
“Peter Obi has always reiterated that he is a loyal member of the Labour Party under Senator Nenadi Usman,” Tanko stated.
“His support for party candidates is part of his commitment to democratic growth and internal party cohesion. Claims of betrayal are simply propaganda being pushed by opposition elements.”
Tanko clarified that both Senator Usman and other party leaders were aware of Obi’s involvement in the Anambra campaign and fully supported his actions.
“Let’s not forget that Peter Obi is a man of integrity. He doesn’t act outside of the values that brought him to national prominence. His actions in Anambra are aligned with his principles and commitment to party unity.”
He further noted that the current wave of speculation was a tactic used by detractors to destabilize the Labour Party ahead of future electoral cycles.
“This is a distraction. Our focus remains on building a stronger, united Labour Party and delivering on the vision of a better Nigeria,” he said.
Tanko urged party faithful and members of the public to ignore what he called “baseless rumours,” assuring them that the party’s leadership remains intact and focused on the larger goal of national transformation.
