Apostle Eugene Ogu, General Overseer of Abundant Life Evangel Mission (ALEM) and former Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) in Rivers State, has predicted that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will face a mass exodus before the 2027 general election.
Speaking in an interview in Port Harcourt, Ogu said Nigerians have lost confidence in the party, insisting that by 2026, the APC will “almost become a desert” as many of its current members are only joining to protect their personal interests.
“Mark my words, in 2026, APC will almost become a desert. All these people moving into the party now just want to protect themselves,” Ogu stated.
He accused church leaders of complicity in Nigeria’s political problems, noting that some pastors who backed the current administration are now silent because they cannot defend their earlier positions.
“The Church is an accomplice but not the driver of the problems we are facing in Nigeria. Some Church leaders are even ashamed to speak now. Those who supported this regime are now afraid to speak. They can’t believe what they have seen,” he said.
“What they spoke as revelation from God means that God didn’t tell them anything. Any pastor who says this country is better than before, let him come out publicly. People should know that we have come to the end of the road, and we must chart a way out of this quagmire. A lot of people are anxiously waiting for 2027.”
Ogu criticised President Bola Tinubu’s claim that his administration has ended corruption and stopped borrowing, describing such statements as misleading. According to him, Nigeria’s debt profile continues to rise, and policies of the current administration have worsened poverty.
“I heard him say no more borrowing but the following day he requested for billions of dollars from the National Assembly. They take Nigerians for granted. Nigeria owes trillions in foreign debt. I don’t think they understand the plight of the people in this country,” Ogu said.
He also warned that without genuine electoral reforms before 2027, the country risks deeper crises. “There must be complete electoral reforms that will guarantee that the votes of Nigerians count. The only escape route for them is a free and sincere election in 2027,” he stressed.
On the political crisis in Rivers State, Ogu condemned the removal of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, attributing it directly to President Tinubu. He said Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas, who was appointed Sole Administrator of the state, lacks legitimacy.
“Whatever is happening, or had happened, in Rivers State is the making of Tinubu and no one else. Was it Wike that removed the governor? Of course, it was the president who did. The buck stops on his table,” he maintained.
Ogu said he would continue to mobilise for change, adding that Nigerians must be ready to demand reforms. He also hinted at a willingness to serve in any capacity if called upon by his people.
“I am ready to serve in any capacity if my people want me to do so. Under my leadership as president general of my community in Imo State, God is using us to do so much there. We have given scholarships to so many people, including those from other churches. That is how to serve God,” he said.
