The National Emergency Management Agency has renewed its strategic partnership and commitment with the Japan International Cooperation Agency to bolster Nigeria’s disaster risk management capabilities. The Director General of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar, said this at the inception meeting between the agency and JICA on emergency support for flood-related disasters in Abuja. A Federal High Court sitting in Minna, Niger State, has sentenced five men to one year in prison for illegal mining. Justice Abdullahi M. Dan-Ige found the defendants, Yusuf Amadu, Babila Sani, Ibrahim Umar, Ephraim Jonas Okoro, and Saidu Mohammed, guilty of illegally possessing and mining precious stones without a license. The men were prosecuted by the Kaduna Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on separate one-count charges under the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act, 2007. The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, on Friday, revealed that no fewer than 5,264,097 individuals were affected by flooding across Nigeria in 2024.
