Super Eagles new player call-ups: Has Moses Usor done enough to start against Guinea-Bissau?

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are set to take on the Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29, and LASK attacker Moses Usor has given coach Eric Chelle a selection headache ahead of the fixture, Soccernet.ng reports.

The LASK forward came off the bench against Madagascar and needed just four minutes to score the winning goal in Nigeria’s 2-1 comeback victory. That goal was a sight for sore eyes. He ran from Nigeria’s half, beat two defenders and wittily slotted the ball into the net.

More importantly, Usor brought a directness to Nigeria’s attack that had been missing. He carried the ball forward, attacked defenders and created something out of nothing before finishing confidently. That makes a case for a first start.

Moses Usor Has Earned Chelle’s Consideration

Moses Usor’s biggest advantage is that he changed the game. Samuel Chukwueze had started that game on the right against Madagascar but was replaced after 61 minnutes. During his time on the pitch, Chukwueze huffed and puffed as usual. He tried to create opportunities, but it did not just work out for him on the night.

However, when Usor got in, he changed the outlook of the left. He always looked smart whenever he had the ball. It was clear that the Malagasy players were wary of the danger he posed.

That quality could be key against Guinea-Bissau. Usor is a very good dribbler and is comfortable carrying the ball over distance and attacking space, which could be useful against a Guinea-Bissau side expected to defend in numbers at times.

If Chelle wants more directness from the start, Usor has made a strong case. It is also important to note that the 24-year-old is a proper workhorse. He can run the length of the pitch for the full 90 minute, he can also be physical. That is something that Chelle must look at for, as Guinea-Bissau will be out for a brawl on Tuesday. That makes the LASK man suited for the fixture.

But Chukwueze Still Has Super Eagles Experience

The argument against throwing Usor straight into the XI is obvious because of his goal last time out, but one impressive cameo should not erase Chukwueze’s experience or his established role with the Super Eagles.

Chukwueze has been in the Super Eagles since 2018, and he has 60 caps to his name. So he has a solid knowledge of how to approach the African game.

There is also a tactical advantage to keeping Usor on the bench. His pace and willingness to run at defenders could be even more effective against tiring Guinea-Bissau defenders in the second half.

The Guinea-Bissau game will be a big test for Nigeria, and Chelle would need to field only his best legs for the encounter.
