The Chief Medical Director of a Lagos-based fertility centre, FertProMax Fertility Clinic, Olajide Wilson, has stressed the need for ethical, patient-centred care in assisted reproduction as access to in-vitro fertilisation expands in Nigeria, noting that innovation must be guided by clinical excellence rather than profit.
Wilson, a clinical embryologist and member of the Association for Fertility and Reproductive Health Nigeria, said fertility treatment must prioritise patients’ overall well-being, particularly given the emotional and financial burden associated with infertility.
Speaking during a facility tour in Gbagada, the CMD said the centre is scaling up services to support couples battling infertility, offering advanced reproductive care and monitoring to improve pregnancy outcomes.
Wilson said, “FertProMax Fertility Clinic is a premium reproductive health centre and IVF support services provider. We specialise in advanced fertility care, reproductive medicine, and comprehensive family-building solutions delivered with clinical excellence, integrity, and cutting-edge medical technology.
“At FertProMax, every clinical and operational decision is guided by excellence, innovation, and patient-centred outcomes. We have done this for two years and intend to be the leading fertility and reproductive health centre in Africa, recognised for clinical excellence, advanced technology, ethical integrity, and exceptional patient experiences.”
According to the World Health Organisation, about 17.5 per cent of the global adult population, roughly one in six people, experience infertility, underscoring the need for improved access to quality and affordable care.
Infertility, defined as the inability to achieve pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse, affects both men and women and is often associated with stigma, emotional distress, and psychosocial challenges.
The WHO has called for urgent action to improve access to high-quality fertility services globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where treatment remains limited and costly.
Continuing, Wilson explained that the facility provides a full range of fertility services, including IVF support, egg and sperm banking, fertility screening, cryopreservation, and ethically managed surrogacy programmes.
“We are a primary fertility clinic, serving individuals and couples across Nigeria and internationally, providing personalised pathways to parenthood grounded in science, precision, and compassionate care. Apart from IVF procedures, we also offer IVF support services in the form of advanced reproductive monitoring. This includes early pregnancy scans, detailed anatomy scans, growth assessments, and Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing, led by specialist expertise,” he said.
The embryologist added that the clinic also functions as a secondary fertility centre, offering its facilities to other fertility service providers.
“We are also a secondary fertility centre, offering our facilities to other fertility service providers who need them to serve their clients. We are the first fertility clinic to offer such a niche service in Nigeria.
“We offer high-standard preservation of eggs, sperm, and embryos within controlled, validated laboratory environments that ensure long-term viability. Our sperm and egg banks are supported by advanced cryostorage systems from a rigorously screened donor database, enabling intended parents to make informed, confident choices. These services are ethically delivered within a framework of privacy, quality assurance, and clinical precision,” he added.
Wilson further disclosed that the clinic provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, including hormonal profiling, semen analysis, and ovarian reserve assessment, especially for intending couples seeking to understand their fertility status.
On outcomes, the fertility expert said the facility has recorded notable success rates within two years of operation.
“We have achieved over 70 per cent pregnancy and live birth rates using surrogacy, over 60 per cent success rates with donor eggs, and over 55 per cent live birth rates with own eggs.
“These figures endear us to many families on this journey towards parenthood. Another reason people choose us is our culture of clinical excellence, technological sophistication, and compassionate patient engagement. Our multidisciplinary team of renowned physicians, embryologists, nurses, and specialists delivers precision-driven, individualised fertility care supported by advanced reproductive infrastructure,” he said.
