Four Nigerian nationals have been arraigned before the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly breaking into residential apartments at Baatsonaa, a suburb of Accra, and stealing valuables including cash, electronics, and a piggy bank known locally as a “susu box.”
The accused — 26-year-old carpenter Moses Chinedu, 24-year-old trader Ugochukwu Onyeka, 26-year-old unemployed man Obumneke Nnebuo, and 26-year-old trader Wisdom Ugochukwu — face seven counts bordering on conspiracy to steal, unlawful entry, causing unlawful damage, and stealing.
According to the prosecution, led by Sergeant Priscilla Avorgah, the men allegedly broke into the apartments of two residents, Leslie Nii Fio Mensah and Abraham Kwaku Frimpong, who live in the same building but in separate flats. The stolen items, valued at GH¢25,470, $2,200, and £2,500, included an HP laptop, Samsung S6 Lite, Samsung A32 and A33 phones, two JBL Bluetooth speakers, two JBL headsets, and a gold-coloured Rolex watch, among other items.
Narrating the events, the prosecution said that on 18 September, the complainants had left for work early in the morning.
On returning home, they discovered their premises had been broken into, with doors damaged and valuables missing. Police investigations revealed that the suspects had scaled the fence wall to gain access to the building.
“The thieves caused damage to the first complainant’s kitchen door and gained access to his room and ransacked it.
They also broke into the second complainant’s apartment and stole various items as listed in the charge sheet,” Sgt Avorgah told the court.
The police later traced one of the stolen tablets to the Millicent Hotel in Baatsonaa in the early hours of 19 September. Upon searching the rooms occupied by the accused, officers reportedly recovered the stolen property, leading to their arrest.
