Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja following a week-long diplomatic mission in New York and Germany, where he represented President Bola Tinubu at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and conducted strategic international engagements.
During the mission, the Vice President delivered President Tinubu’s national statement to the General Assembly, advocating for comprehensive reforms of the United Nations. “Nigeria believes that the UN must evolve to reflect the current global realities and ensure more inclusive representation,” he stated during his address.
In addition to his speech at UNGA, VP Shettima pressed for Africa’s sovereignty over its mineral resources, valued at approximately $700 billion.
He engaged with multiple stakeholders, including representatives from the United Kingdom and the Gates Foundation, to explore partnerships supporting Africa’s economic and developmental objectives.
Shettima later held a bilateral meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, during which he discussed Nigeria’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
“The Secretary-General commended Nigeria’s contributions to global peace and security and encouraged continued engagement at the highest levels,” Shettima said.
The Vice President also presented Nigeria’s energy transition opportunities, highlighting a $200 billion investment potential to global investors.
“Our aim is to attract sustainable investments that align with Nigeria’s energy goals and support a just transition for communities across the country,” he explained.
Before concluding his engagements in Germany, Shettima met with the Nigerian diaspora community, assuring them of sustained engagement under the Tinubu administration’s policies and programmes. “Our citizens abroad remain a critical part of Nigeria’s development, and we are committed to deepening their involvement in national initiatives,” he said.
The Vice President’s office described the trip as an opportunity to reinforce Nigeria’s position on international platforms while promoting partnerships that advance the country’s economic and strategic interests.
