The House of Representatives has passed through second reading a bill to create special seats for women in the National Assembly and States Houses of Assembly.

The bill, sponsored by the Deputy Whip of the House, Nkeirukah Onyejeocha and 85 others was passed without debate on Wednesday.

Although the bill was not debated, the synopsis by the lawmaker revealed that the lawmaker is proposing the creation of one senatorial district in each state and FCT reserved for women.

Furthermore, the creation of two federal constituencies per state for women. The bill still permits women to contest for the other existing offices.

There are currently 360 federal constituency and 109 senatorial districts in the country.

The bill has the potential to create 37 additional senatorial districts and 74 federal constituencies if passed into law.

The bill was referred to the special committee on constitutional amendment.
